Roots & Roars

Roots & Roars

Cub Zay started with one frustrating shopping trip and a very specific problem. I couldn't find boys' clothes that were both beautiful and practical. The basics were too basic. The premium options were either tiny versions of adult clothes or covered in oversized logos and characters. And the fits? So restrictive that my son could barely run around in them.

I'd go from store to store looking for a simple, well cut trouser in a colour that actually worked. I found a French brand I loved the look of but the cuts weren't made for kids who move. I tried the high street for everyday pieces but after a few washes, everything bobbled. And with kids' clothes, you wash them over and over again.

I just wanted smart casual. Good fabrics. Clothes that looked put together without restricting little ones from being little ones.

So I built it.

The capsule that started it all

The very first piece I designed was the Sky Chord. I've always loved corduroy on kids but the shapes are always wrong and you can never find a spring colour! So we created our own. A lightweight organic cotton cord that doesn't stick to skin, doesn't bobble after washing, and works year round. We spent time getting the exact shade of sky blue right - cool and warm tones woven together so it goes with greys, warm blues, and everything in between.

That obsession with detail is in every single piece.

Why it works for real mornings

Our mornings are chaos. Nursery drop off. Getting to work. Getting out the door. I choose my sons outfit the night before, a five minute job - because every piece in the Cub Zay capsule works together. Mix and match, no thought required, no compromise on how he looks.

That's exactly what I built this for. Not just for my son. For every mum (& dad) who cares about how her family shows up in the world, but doesn't have an hour to spend thinking about it.

The Lion

My son Zayden has what we lovingly call a lion's mane. Cubs grow into little lions and that image never left me.

I wanted a logo that felt warm, iconic and full of character. Not a generic cartoon. Not overly polished. Something that could sit beautifully on premium fabric and still belong to a child.

He's almost two. Too young to know this brand was inspired by him. But he looks incredible running around in his pieces - and that's enough for now.
